Rider Radar & SEE: Anticipate Hazards. Respond Early.

Aug 16, 2026 | Motorcycle Safety

Rider Radar is the disciplined practice of anticipating traffic situations. It helps riders maintain awareness, maximize visibility, and identify potential hazards before they become problems.

Scan: Look well ahead and continuously search for traffic conflicts, road surface hazards, and changing conditions.

Monitor: Check mirrors regularly, monitor blind spots, and observe the behaviour of other road users to maintain a complete picture of your surroundings.

Position: Maintain a safe buffer, protect escape routes, and choose lane positions that maximize visibility and create space from potential hazards.

Riders also rely on the SEE Strategy: Search, Evaluate, and Execute. SEE helps riders identify hazards early, assess the level of risk, and respond appropriately.

Search: Scan the road ahead, check your mirrors, and monitor your blind spots to identify potential hazards, road surface conditions, or turning vehicles.

Evaluate: Consider what could go wrong as these factors interact, anticipate possible outcomes and scenarios, and identify an escape route if necessary.

Execute: Take action to avoid the hazard by adjusting your speed, changing your lane position, or communicating with your hand signals, lights, and horn when necessary.
